What is Breathing Re-training?This is an evidence based approach recommended for people with asthma by the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence that helps you regain a diaphragmatic breathing style once more and sustain this style in the face of challenge. In some people sustained or intermittent emotional reactivity, where we are reminded of states of being associated with old traumatic memories such as occurs in episodes of sustained stress, asthma attacks, and including physical or sexual abuse result in dysfunctional breathing (hyperventilation). An integral part of the mindful physiology approach is to measure the effects on breathing chemistry by measuring carbon dioxide in the out breath. The breathing chemistry is measured using capnography which allows you to see whether breathing re-training is required. Recognition of the presence of sustained dysfunctional breathing can be aided by the completion of the Nijmegen Questionnaire. Contact Dr. David Beales to receive a copy of the questionnaire.
